Club Night – Speaker Chris Hewis
Chris gave us riveting talk based on a Lincolnshire nurse who was awarded the Military
Medal, namely Jean Bemrose MM SRN. Chris’s Saxilby Historic Society had been given
Jean’s small case by an elderly relative which held her medals, photos and an autograph
book. The whole story of her life was based around all these personal belongings. She was
awarded the Military Medal for her gallantry and devotion to duty during a WW1 Raid
on Etables Hospital, France ( Hugely significant, as normally only issued to serving
members of the Armed Forces ). This whole talk gave us tremendous insight into front
line logistics of dealing with casualties.
Chris will be back for another talk Wed. 10th January 2024.
End of Season Run
The weather had been awful with torrential rain & flooding in the preceding two
days. The Sebastopol Inn, Minting which was to have been our starting coffee venue
telephoned Paddy & Ande on the Saturday to inform them the pub was under two
feet of water! Paddy then set about trying to locate another venue in the vicinity. The
Minting village hall agreed to let us use their car park but other facilities were out of use
as people whose houses had been flooded were sleeping in it. Decision made and an email
was fired off to all the entrants advising them of the change of plan.
Lo and behold the next day, as forecast, was bright blue sunshine with not a cloud in sight.
Altogether 26 cars were entered and 43 members booked in for lunch. The drivers briefing
took longer than normal as the route needed amending to avoid the obligatory ford! When
everyone went to their cars we had a five minute hilarious “Mexican Stand Off” as no
one wanted to be the first off. In the end Nigel Snow bravely took lead position.
The route covered some great “Austin Roads “ with some spectacular views over the
Wolds. To the best of my knowledge no one got lost ( must be a first for Bruce! ) and all the
cars arrived in good order at The Bluebell Inn, Belchford. Here our pre-booked Sunday
lunches were wholesome, hearty and delicious. This was a fitting end to our seasons events
and once again sincere thanks must go to Paddy and Ande Malone for all their efforts
in devising the route, sorting the entries & sourcing the excellent finishing venue.
