October Report 2017

Wentworth House Rally

A very large number of Austins took part in this rally near Rotherham with a strong contingent from the Lincolnshire Group. We had a reserved parking place immediately in front of the house and it was good to meet up with my counterpart John Gray and his Sheffield Group members. By sheer coincidence Gerald Mullord parked his Tickford Seven next to my Tickford bodied Heavy Twelve. A case of little and large! People enjoy watching the Tickford roof in operation and as the weather presented us with showers it was wound up and down like a fiddlers elbow! If you have not read it I recommend the book Black Diamonds which gives an historical account of the history of Wentworth House and the Fitzwilliam family.

Monthly Luncheon Meet – The Woodcock, Burton Waters

These started again on the third Wednesday ( 20th September ), and lo and behold 18 members turned up for a very convivial meal. It was very pleasing to see Mel & Joan Baxter who had travelled from Spalding to be with us. I had also received an e mail some months previous from a New Zealand member who said he would be over in Lincolnshire visiting his elderly mother, who did her courting in a Chummy, and would like to meet our group. He duly arrived along with his family. Photos were taken of our Austins and his mum was particularly pleased to view Paddy & Ande Malone’s Chummy. He also shared photos of his lovely looking wide door Seven.

Stuart Ulph’s Media Night

Twenty nine members turned up on a very dirty & rainy evening. However the rain did not dampen the spirits of Si Holder [ a founder Lincs. Gp. Member ] and his wife  who now lives in Essex and had not returned for some 40 years!  Roger & Deb Coober travelled down from Pickering and Nic Turley came from Halifax. Such is the draw of Stuart Ulph’s media night! The last two couples setting off for home at around 10.15 pm.

I was supposed to be taking notes of Stuart’s film clips. However, I was so absorbed with  both the films and Stuart’s idiosyncratic commentary that I hardly jotted anything down. Suffice to say the evening was a great success and both Stuart & Rodney Smith [Technical Operator ] received loud acclamation. We even cajoled Stuart into agreeing to October 2018.

 Holland – Dutch ATDC Rally

The rally is confirmed as being in Stompetoren and I have 10 rooms booked at the Van der Valk Hotel, Akersloot bij Alkmaar. Jody Kaldenberg the Chairman of the Dutch Austin Ten Drivers Club has obtained a special rate of 129.50 euros per night for two people in a double en suite room with breakfast. The plan is to sail overnight Thursday 28th June from Hull, arriving Rotterdam on the Friday morning. The non-motorway journey to Alkmaar is a distance of 92 miles. The ATDC rally is over the weekend but we are booking seven nights in the hotel in order to explore the town of Alkmaar and the surrounding area, sailing home overnight on Friday night 6th July. As well as the modest rally fee the other cost will be the ferry. No group discount available so you will need to book your own crossings, best done a.s.a.p. To date I have 7 couples definitely signed up. If you would like to take part please e mail a.s.a.p. I should also be able to obtain more than ten rooms if required. Please google Alkmaar as there is lots on the web.
